Title: Is this a gladiolus, and can i eat it?
Post by: MontyMonk on August 24, 2010, 18:59:39
I had a neighbor tell me that these plants were edible...he said they were gladiolus.  I just wanted a few more opinions before they make it to the plate. ..they are definitely pretty but not pretty enough to get sick over  :P

All I can contribute is that in Oman wild white gladiolus bulbs/corms are a delicacy like baked chestnuts. I ate lots. That is not to say that ALL gladiolus are edible, I don't know.

I went to a lecture on butterflies and their food plants. Lecturer said butterflies/caterpillars that feed on members of the Asclepiad family are all poisonous, because all Asclepiadaceae are poisonous to animals and human beings. Well....it is an important food family for people in southern Oman who collect their food from the wild. I've eaten them, too, lovely succulent roots and crisp fruiting pods etc.

Also the Richard Maybe(sp?) book 'Food For Free' is useful.
