Title: Sweetcorn for chickens
Post by: elhuerto on August 17, 2010, 11:38:16
Picked the last of the cobs yesterday and most had been left too long with the kernels generally wrinkled and dry. I was going to give them to the chickens but what's the best way do you think, cooked, dried, both or something else?

Cheers

Just give them as they are..and they will have lots of fun by pecking the cobs clean..no special treatment needed..
If you have lots left over..you can dry or freeze some to give your girls over longer period of time. But normally they will eat corn as much as they've been given..greedy comes to my mind ;D

Goodlife I buy some frozen mini corns & cook them. Do I need to or can I just defrost them?

Hmm....you don't need to...but it is different story how they prefer it ::)
When I give some frozen sweetcorn I just run it under the hot water..but I never given mine any mini corn..whether it is soft enough for them in raw state.. ::)..although they are greedy, they can be so fussy too ;D

Mine have always gone mad for sweetcorn!  In fact i buy a cheap 'value' range frozen loose sweetcorn, which I can take a handfull of and leave out overnight to add to any other 'leftovers' I have they always go for this first!! Also if we have cobs ourselves there is usually one left oveer for them to share!! they pick it clean!! but it is cooked, so mine will eat either cooked or raw!!

I've been giving mine the cob after we've had our meal, there is always a little bit of corn left on each, they strip them back to the wood, and it keeps them happy for ages.

They also go mad for corn.  They've been enjoying windfall apples as well.
