Squashes like pumpkin, marrow and butternut etc were grown to help feed the masses.

Yes they are all pretty tasteless and boring after the first tasting.  When the excitement of growing a huge one or two is past it's novelty.

Most of us know that we live with supermarkets full of wonderful foods.

One day those foods may not be there, the poor people of the world could, instead of providing us with thier succulant fruit and vegetables could decide to keep them for themselves.

When that happens the lovely lawns and rose gardens we enjoy will have to be turned into vegetable gardens to feed ourselves. We need to keep the knowledge of how to grow and share it.

Scoff if you like but that time.....it may not be that far off.

Sorry PH but I don't agree  about the boring bit, it is silly in my opinion, there are so many different tastes in pumpkins and squash just like there are in green leafy veg.

Plus they can be used in so many ways that leafy veg cannot, from jams, pickles, relishes, chutneys, main courses, side dishes, soups, desserts etc ect.

If plain roasted or steamed or maybe just in a basic soup I might agree, but try pumkin French fries if you have a lot to use up, or slices, battered in Tempura nd deep fried...the list goes on and on and on.

This bumps up an idea I have had for years..might just do it on another post.

Philbasford - I love it in curries (Indian or Thai style), in filo pastry as a savoury pie, mixed in with pasta, in a risotto ..... the list goes on  :)
