Title: That Meteor Shower
Post by: Kepouros on August 12, 2010, 21:16:03
According to this morning`s paper:-

"A spectacular display of shooting stars will fill the heavens tonight as clear skies combine with a once-a-year meteor shower"

The trouble is that it is (yet again) pouring with rain, and has been all evening.

Has the Meteorological Office relocated to a different planet?

Mamy years ago I went to California and camped high up on Mt Whitney the hgihest mountain in I contiguous US at this time of year.  The meteor shower was spectacular.

Clear skies by 10.30pm in TW12 - despite the chronic light pollution inside the M25 I saw seven Perseids in the space of about 40 minutes. Must have been a better show given darker skies.

It was very clear, I waited up as long as I could, in the end I had to concede to tiredness. I went to bed at 12, without seeing any  :(

Think they must have been earlier than predicted I saw lots before 11.30 & then decided to go to bed

In the end I stayed up until 2.30 am in the hope of seeing something, but as it was then  still p*ddling down with rain I gave up and went to bed.  So much for `clear skies`.

If our Coalition really want to save money they could save a few million by closing the meteorological office and sending all the staff off to be horse racing tipsters - they couldn`t do much worse at that than they manage with the weather forecasts.

The weather lads and lasses are as good at guessing the weather, as I am at predicting those six numbers on a Saturday night. ::) :)

Lovely clear sky in Norfolk, saw a few just after 11pm and again around midnight
not as many as I had hoped but good none the less.  It was a brilliant night and there were hundreds of stars. Worth turning out into the night air for and it wasn't particularly cold either so I just sat on the bench with a cup of tea and enjoyed the night.
