Title: Poorly Runner Beans!
Post by: Barfonion on August 09, 2010, 14:01:01
My "St George" runner beans have not been well this season! The initial problem was their unwillingness to
climb even after tying them to the canes (each plant in many places), then the failure of many of the leaves to open fully along with a reduced crop of slightly mis-shapen pods (compared to those from unaffected plants). These problems have persisted throughout the summer.
Some plants are behaving however and I am picking a (reduced) crop.
I prepared a trench about 12"x12" by the width of the plot and emptied the contents of one of my compost bins and backfilled with soil and planted my home raised plants into this at the recommended 6"x12" spacing.
I've used "Scarlet Emperor" up until this year with few problems.

Any ideas ?

Was there any manure that could have been contaminated with aminopyralid in your compost bin?

I can't offer any suggestions as to why your beans are not doing well because my St.George are brilliant!  Sorry, I know that's no help at all.  :(

What has gone in your compost? Grass clippings from a sprayed lawn maybe?

sounds like aminopryalid, did you use any manure?
