Just before I went away last Tuesday I watered it and the soil in the pot went very frothy and took a while to clear with the hose,I knew there was something wrong then......come back to this.My Daughter watered while I was away and the rest are fine.

There is a slime mold that does this, it lives on decaying matter in the soil, why it would be on yor tomato I truly don't know unless this one was dying off for some reason and the roots became the decaying matter, then the plant finally succumbed. That is far as my thinking goes.

Thanks for that Jeannine,it has puzzled me this one..........
Bleach can do that to a tomato plant.... or too much tomato food....

Is that an outlet pipe?- I do wonder if that has something to do with it
I did wonder that, there is an toilet in the building behind that is never used. The pot has never been directly under the pipe and I have never noticed it leaking . ???
That remains my favourite explanation though-it got used,a bit of bleach and the wind taking it over the pot?
