sorry I've not been around for a while - too busy enjoying the summer!
I've got a crown prince squash plant that's getting pretty big. Will I need to prune it or should I just let it grow? How many fruits should I let set on it? (It only has one so far, so I might be jumping the gun a bit with that one!)
Hi
last year I had about 3 per plant, and nipped them out after I was sure they had been pollinated. Bit rampant isn't it!!!
1066 :)
Mine has just set a few more after only having ONE for over a month!
I buried some of the vines. Maybe that helps?
1066 - it is huge! I didn't realise it'd get that big! Luckily it's growing along the fence as a climber or it'd take up most of my veg patch.
GAnnie - again due to the climber thing, I don't think I can bury thte vines, unless I train it downwards.
I did just notice there's another female flower just open. The fruitlet on it seems bigger than the first one that didn't set, so fingers crossed!

I think the Queensland Blue is even bigger, I'm growing them in a different patch this year, and blimey they have taken off!! And I'm wondering fior next year if I could grow them along my bramble fence - but that might be asking for trouble!!

Mine's running around my large shed, up my compost bin making a bid for the shed roof, escaping along my (inherited) weed hill, wrapping itself around the adjacent crookneck and climbing up it's alloted trellis. It's running wildly in all directions......amazing growth :o
All of which leads me to a question:
what stress do you think allowing them to climb does during drought. To my mind, it must take more energy to pump the water up a stem that has climbed up on a shed roof or tree as opposed to a stem lying horizontal vegging out so to speak.
