Title: No Dig Policy
Post by: David P on August 03, 2010, 00:34:21
Hello there all

Was just wondering whether anyone could let me know about the no dig policy... I currently have an allotment I share and we are both keen on trying to implement this practice.....

Any advice would be great

Many thanks

Dave

Have a look at Charles Dowding's site. I had his 2 books for my birthday last year & we went over to it this year. Our plot was a mess when we got it so it had been double dud, trenched & manured. We are doing the same with our daughters plot & then she is going over to it. Very pleased so far.

Does it matter what kind of manure I use for a no dig policy?

And does anyone know anywhere near Nottingham where I could get the stuff delivered?

Thanks

Use whatever's available. I rely on grass cuttings and autumn leaves which are delivered to the site.

Look for stables and equestrian centres in the yellow pages.... they're always happy to have someone picking the stuff up.... I'd advise looking for  field manure rather than stable manure, although it will have weed seeds in it it won't have any aminopyralid contamination that still seems to be getting into stable manure ....

i've got a few beds where i am no-digging and these look by far the best at the moment - worms slowly pulling compost material downwards and these beds have far fewer weeds.  I plan to smother all beds in whatever manure/compost materials I can find this autumn/winter. For me the no dig appears to work.  Good luck.
