I joined the Genes Reunited site a while ago to try and research my family tree after no luck tracing my family I left it alone.
Last week I had a contact from a relative of my great grandfathers sister..so a distant cousin. I started looking at my grandmothers photos again, imagine my surprise when this turned up.

Allotments Church Road Newton Abbot
My grandmother is Evelyn the little girl in the photo and the guy at the front is her father.
Allotments - its in the blood ;D
What a lovely pic.
It must be in the blood. My 1st memory is of being pushed in my fathers wheelbarrow to his allotment and being given a spade to help.
Evelyn is 90 today and we will visit her later, must remember to ask her about the allotments ;)
what a great photo and story :) Are the allotments still there?

I tried to find out today, the Newton Abbot Allotment people have an answer phone and so do the town council, guess ill have to wait until next week.
Looking at the town information, the allotments might be there with a different name also 'Church Road' might have been renamed.
Gran did enjoy seeing the boys and seeing our cat (she loves cats and they let us bring him to see her) and getting her presents, but was having a bad day today as far as her memory goes.
How lovely to see that.
Yes thanks for sharing...... :)

Sounds so familiar Mortality. I've still got my old mum's allotment rules book.
We set up a little veg garden where my mum is, and although she has very severe memory problems, the one thing she's still expert in is recognising and naming the veg that are growing there, and she can just about hold the hose to water a bit, and munch on a few green peas. It's so rewarding to see.
what a lovely photo!
How wonderful for you to have that little peice of family history and see that Allotments were a big part of their lives too.
I just spoke to the Allotment secritary for Newton Abbot and he thinks the allotments are still there, smaller but still there. Apparently Church road and Coach road intersect and some of the allotments nowadays are called Coach Road allotments.
He is going to ask some of the older allotmenteers for more information and get back to me.
How lovely. Hope he's successful for you :).
