Is it possible to still have a virus even although an up-to-date virus checker (Norton) shows a result of "0 viruses found" after a full system scan?
I am still not able to send email (although I can receive). If I click on "send" I am immediately disconnected from the internet. My ISP assures me that they are no longer experiencing problems today but my problem still persists. I can browse the internet without any problems but as soon as my email tries to do it's automatic send and receive every 10 minutes the internet connection is disrupted. If I close outlook so that the automatic send and receive doesn't happen then the internet connection remains without any disruption.
It is still possible to have a virus as the anti-virus software is always one step behind. They can't screen for a virus until they know about it -by which time people are infected.
Not sure your problem is a virus -are you sure that outlook isn't just doing an automatic disconnect when it finishes checking for new mail? I think there's an option in it somewhere that does this -but I no longer use it and so can't check.
Jeremy
Does your version of Norton do automatic up-dates? if not you must be sure to run these yourself daily on start up otherwise you will be left wide open to attack.
Jeremy's theory with your e-mail seems more credible.
Jeremy, have checked Outlook, and the option you mention is there, so hopefully Jess, you just need to un-tick the box and all will be well !
Thanks all. Have checked the outlook options and yes, the disconnect after send and receive was checked. Have unchecked it now and hey presto, I can now send and receive email. That check box never used to be checked but something must have happened when I loaded the new virus software. Outlook was disconnecting the internet connection but the virus checker was still scanning the outgoing mail and because the connection was terminated the mail could not go. Thanks a million, you guys were a lot more helpful and have given much more useful information than the helpdesk at my ISP. ;D
PS Roy, my virus does automatic updates and so does the sypware software I have.
Hi Jess,
I've always found Outlook to be a bit of a nightmare. It seems a very labourious way of using email. At the moment I am using gmail (web mail provided free by google) and am very pleased with it. This also means that I can pick my email up anywhere where I can get onto the internet. Then I simply go to the web site and logon - and hey presto there is all my email and it filters out spam (which we were plagued with when using pop3 mailboxes - which is probably what you have?)
Sarah.
Thanks Sarah, I will have a look into gmail. The Norton Internet Security I have has an Anti-spam feature so we don't suffer too much with spam mail.
If anyone suspects they may have a virus-pop to Symantec's website, disable any firewall and allow them to do a full scan.Their system should be able to find any viruses which may have gotten through.
Norton is completely blind to some types of viruses; diallers for example. If ever in doubt it's worth downloading Spyware Nuker 2004. You have to pay for the full version, but the free one scans and lists every detail of what it finds. Whenever I have to sort someone else's computer out, there always seem to be viruses that Norton says it can't fix ( even after live update ) or that it doesn't recognise. Nuker lists all the registry entries and files affected so you can manually delete them. Tedious but thorough.
