Would it be too late to sow some Swedes  ???

No not too late. I've planted at this time in previous years and been ok, got a reasonable crop. Which reminds me - better find my packet of seeds, my first sowing got heat frazzled and I lost them all. :(

I sowed mine on Sunday direct and they have just germinated today.  ;D ;D ;D

do you sow them in ground or pots

you can do either as they do transplant well, I always sow mine in trays and pot them on as big as possible so they get a good start in the ground to cope with slugs and snails etc
