Title: Philadelphus help needed to propagate.
Post by: Digeroo on July 16, 2010, 11:03:01
I have a Belle Etoile.  I love it but I have never managed to get a cutting to take.  Does anyone have any hints please?

Semi-ripe cuttings seem to work Take them now. the pieces should be light brown in the stem rather than green.
If that does not work then try a ripe cutting in September. Take a piece about 12 to 15 inches long of darker brown stuff and put it into the soil in a shady spot.
If there are branches near to the ground then you can also layer them. Scrape some bark off the bottom of a branch and peg it to the ground.

I will take some cuttings for you and root them. If they take then I could probably almost certainly find a way of sending you some.

Is Belle Etoile the double variety?  Because, if it is, Palustris, I should be extremely grateful for a rooted cutting.

No, Belle Etoil is one with a purple centre to the flower.
I do have other Philadelphus which have double flowers, they are all dwarf varieties though, rather than the tall P. virginalis type.

Well, could I be really cheeky, and say I wouldn't mind a rooted cutting of both, ;D

Will take some then. Not sure of success though, some of them are harder to do than others. Will post when they have rooted (if).

Thanks ever so Palustris.  Will appreciate anything, and if there is anything I can swap, just let me know.

Am looking for rooted Deutzia chunnii(nangpoensis) or Deutzia denbeigii, but no one seems to even have the plants.

Sorry, I've only got one Deutzia, and I think it's scabra, which is also the most commonly available.

If you think of anything else, let me know.
