Post by: janmac on July 15, 2010, 21:04:55
I thought I had done everything by the book with my first lot of cabbages, they have been in the ground a week and the leaves have got white patches on them???  There is healthy leaves coming through underneath.

posting a picture of the problem takes the guesswork out of it. If it looks like this

then its White Rust. Remove and dispose of all infected leaves, do not compost.

What you have to remember when you grow crops is that you are not in control, ever. You are at the mercy of many many adverse effects, its doesnt matter how expertly you plant and cultivate, there always something waiting to infect, wilt, brown, rot or eat your crops. Dont worry about it, all you can do is your best.

Hi Janmac I wouldn't worry to much as long as you have healthy ones coming through, most plants don't like a change in conditions especially when you put them in the open ground, when they get established you will have nice new growth and the white patched leaves will drop off,or is there signs of white fly they leave a white ring of like powder where they sit and suck the sap,if you post a pic of the leaves someone may be able to put your mind at ease other wise we are just guessing

Other thing it could be is bleaching  caused by the hot sun we had until a few days ago, especially if you watered in the morning..... so that's one utterly trivial, one fairly trivial and one thing that in my view should be considered notifiable.... White Rust is nasty.....

It is probably WHITE BLISTER, white raised blisters which turn Grey and powdery it is quite common on cabbages and sprouts, we have had some high temperatures and humidity so the conditions are there for it to generate.
Remove the infected leaves and dispose of them, don,t compost them or leave any on your soil.
