Title: BBC iplayer
Post by: katynewbie on July 14, 2010, 21:04:46
Sometimes it says 'insufficient bandwidth to stream this programme' when I try to watch things and other times it doesn't. How do I increase the bandwidth? New computer? Faster broadband? Anything I can do which is free?!

When it says "insufficient bandwidth" it means that you Broad band is either too slow or congested. I would expect this late afternoon or early evening (when the kids are out of school).

To illustrate the problem, think of your water supply. You want to water the plants and you are up the hill. Many people down the hill are also watering their plants, so you get very little if any water. Even worse if somebody left the stop valve half on at the end of the road.

There is an option to use "Lower bandwodth version" on the homepage.

It may help but Larkshall is right - there are many areas of congestion down the line from you including anyone in your house right through your providor down to the beeb themselves. None of which you can do anything about.

You can try a speed test to see what bandwidth you are getting..
