Title: Got potato + tree onions + elephant garlic offset bulbils, for fun beans etc
Post by: chriscross1966 on July 12, 2010, 13:13:47
Following my harvests this week I've got potato onions and I'll soon have offset bulbils from the elephant garlic (I dug up an elephant garlic that was in the same row as my softneck and there were several offsets on it. I've also got Catawissa tree onions coming out of my ears, will have both basal bulbs (a few) and top-set bulbs (rather more)

I'm looking for interesting beans to grow as shelling beans. particularly a good kidney bean, preferably climbing. Also a soy bean that handles this country OK with instructions ...

Hi Chris,

I am growing catawissa for the first time this year, they have bulbed and sprouted at the top ready to drop over amongst my callalloo. Do they have much flavour or is it novely value, i have told my better half that we will not be trying them until next year, but i am curious.

second question, sorry but you do seem to know a lot and i am still learning. We have pulled our garlic and some have mini garlic bulbs on the top of the green shoots, can they be used for planting next year????

Kindest regards

Kx

They're quite strong. Use the leaves or the green topsets. You can use mature topsets or bottom bulbs, if you want the palaver of peeling them.

I'd not bother with the bottom bulbs as Robert points out they're a hassle to peel. THe ones I've used have been quite strong but the topsets make excellent pickles cos they're hard as bullets (a big plus in a pickled onion). You can grow garlic from topsets if you have topsetting garlic, though you might get big single cloves next year (not a bad thing, just different and quite convenient in the kitchen)...

Hi Chris,

I'd love to tree onions.  I have soya bean 'elena' available if that's of interest, but no instructions I'm afriad.

I'd rather like to try a few potato onions ... I've got a part packet of Soya Bean seed I bought last year (but didn't have any success with) also some "yin-yan" beans (not climbing) and some Hyacinth (lab-lab) beans (these do climb, but are VERY cold sensitive, good in a sheltered spot)

Hope to hear from you  :)

Hi Leesa

Yes the butter beans made it!..... sorry for not following my own thread..... hope to get some catawissa topsets and basal bulbs this week if I get a chance to get to the allotment with enough time to do more than just water stuff.....
