Post by: shirlton on July 10, 2010, 17:43:04
Today we came home with(wait for it) seven courgettes from 4 plants. They had to be picked cos they were getting too big. There will probably be another 6 tomorrow ::)

Yup, looks like you are now gonna need the book of the 1001 ways to use the beggers.

If you have a dog that likes you to throw things,  like a stick, throw them and then tease the dog a bit and it will eat them.

It's ok, they are on the list of things fine for dogs to eat.

Yes I've got 4 plants and picked the first (small) one today. Maybe my glut will come soon!

Also no cucumbers yet - I always used to have to take bags of them to work to give away by this time.

Glad to hear others are doing better!  :)

This is my third year of trying to grow 'em and the first time I've ever got as far as a fruit nearly big enough to pick.  (In the past the slugs/snails have got them first.)  One plant here but it's only me who likes them.  :)

For the past three years I have grown aurelia courgette(yellow). I am still using the original seed packet. Like the rest of you I started harvesting and they keep coming ;D I am also growing a patty pan type called Moonbean and I will be picking one of those tomorrow!!. Courgettes are not my favourite vegetable but I just love seeing them grow on the plot!

Well done Shirl!

I've cut down to just 19 plants this year and started picking this week, they were only small but I couldn't wait.

I love courgettes!

Got up this morning and there they were looking at me. Ribboned two of them and put to soak in honey vinegar and ginger for tonites salad. Daughter will probably have a couple so they won't  be wasted.

Yup, thought I was doing really well picking them small but yesterday found one about 8" long that I must have missed.

Still, it's nice to know something is surviving the drought!

This is first year i havent got loads going spare.  I've had alot rotting on me when they are babies.  (and i keep forgetting to pollinate by hand) .  have 4 plants and i'd say in total i've only got 4 or 5 courgettes in total so far.
shirlton is that honey vinegar home made or bought? if homemade do you have a recipe.   ( sounds lovely with courgettes.

Last year I left courgettes on neighbours doorsteps and then ran away before they saw me.

I've given my neighbour one plant that I had no room for, bad mistake, now I can't offload my excess on her  ::) - there's the neighbour the other side though  ;)

yes I too have a glut of courgettes, I've tried off loading them on the neighbours but short of leaving them on their doorsteps in the early hours I decided to eat them raw, I was really supprised that they taste a bit like avocado pears, I am sure you could use them in a recipe including avocados. Lets be honest what can courgettes be used for, only stir fries, unless anyone out there knows different, any recipes would be very welcome.

My favourite for courgettes is to fry them and then top with tomato and cheese and brown under the grill.  Can use a few herbs.

Last year I made a courgette cake.   Certainly disappeared fast.

QuoteCongrats, all the ones that form on my plant drop off after a couple of days.
Have you tried a bit of hand pollination?  Though we have plenty of pollen beetles around at the moment.

There used to be a great website called receipezaar which had thousands of zucchini recipes, but it seems to have changed to food.com but now I cannot get the searches to work.

This site has quite a few http://basic-recipes.com/veget/zucchini.htm

Kebabs, mix with tomatos, mushrooms, onions, peppers.....meat or halloumi cheese. Cover in yogurt mixed with spices, actually not sure if that works with cheese...... :-\

Or use instead of aubergine for mousaka :)
