Title: Outdoor Cucumbers
Post by: Slug_killer on July 09, 2010, 17:03:28
How do you support yours ?

Mine are up bean poles, one cuke per pole, but they are getting hammered by the recent strong winds.

I only grow the bush varieties outdoors so i let them scramble wherever they go, you could fleece against the fierce winds

Mine is growing up the chicken-wire type boundary fence. I'm sure my neighbour won't mind, as long as I share!

Mine are growing up canes which I tie in every other day or so.

Mine are growing up canes as well.

You could try training them fairly low if it's often windy.

And you could try a see-through plastic windbreak - you can buy thick plastic sheeting for decorating/building projects, it doesn't cost much. And tie it to bamboo canes. It will perhaps help keep the humidity up for the cucumbers as well, which apparently they like.

I've grown mine up some garden netting I secured to a wall. The other part of it is held by the large pots they are on. There a mini, a sikkim, and a melon all growing happily together. I tied in a few early on so they would grow away from each other but as it is the sikkim is so vigorous it's growing everywhere!

that sikkim was the only one that survived my zealous over watering of the 6 seeds mpdjulie donated! (stupid newbie error!), but they way it's growing and setting fruit I may only need the one! Thanks mpdjulie!!!
