Title: Dandy julienne tool for squash
Post by: GrannieAnnie on July 07, 2010, 22:14:35
I read about a julienne tool to use on summer squash and found one at a kitchen store.
It quiickly cuts the squash into long linguini - like strings when you pare down the whole side of the squash but doesn't get the seedy part.
I browned some butter in a pan and tossed the squash strings in it for a couple minutes.
Added some cooked shrimp with garlic and lemon juice. Very fresh tasting and quick to prepare.

We went to a cookery demo at Hampton Court yesterday. Not that impressive but he recommended using a Julienne rather than a grater for shredding courgettes for a salad he was making. But then he showed us a tool that just looked like a small flat grater. What is yours like?

I've got a little implement that my d-in-l brought back from Bangkok with her - a small grater with a handle that you stroke down the side of carrots, cucumbers etc to make very fine shreds for putting into her delicious spring rolls.

It also removes narrow parallel strips of skin from cucumbers if you then want to slice them thinly into salads, looking very smart and decorative. Not my usual thing at all, but now I can't resist doing it.

Sounds similar- I'll try to take a pix today. The store had a more expensive type that had a choice of three blades for wider strips but I went for simpler. And cheaper. And probably easier to wash than the dial-up version. Yes Artichoke- it is addictive. ;D

Yes! It doesn't look like that, being pink and plasticky, but the result is the same. Will try your squash idea, sounds delicious.
