Title: Achocha ago go
Post by: Angel2122 on July 06, 2010, 21:56:05
Anyone else growing these rampant weird little curcubits in the greenhouse??? Mine are minute, go yellow and drop off. Is it lack of pollination or could it be too hot under glass for them.  Help - tips / hints appreciated for this otherwise fab unusual crop.

Hi Angel2122,

I think your achochas have heard you saying they're "fab" and have decided to commit suicide to spare you the disappointment..........

i only ever grew them outside, and they weren't rampant, but they did produce fruit. I never ate them but it was fun when they exploded.

don't know what your problem is. Someone else may help

I think probably too hot and dry.  I grew mine outside 4 years ago and they cropped very well, and taste great fried like peppers.  Since then they come up everywhere!  When I grew them the first year I grew some in the greenhouse but they went yellow.

They prefer it cool and damp... so the greenhouse probably doesn't suit...  :-X

arh, thanks. Maybe i should let them scramble out of the window then and double up as shading for the greenhouse and get more suited conditions.  PS - they're NOT the exploding variety - grow veg to eat not for the potential of loss of sight due to flying seeds lol

I grew them one year in my greenhouse and found pollination to be a problem, till I let them scramble out of a window to be pollinated by hover flies. I never saw a bee on them but hundreds of hover flies.
