We did the same thing and the whole compost heap sprouted potatoes, We now put them in our Brown Compost Bin which the council collect every two weeks. I do hope this stuff is sterilised  before it is sold as compost as I have just put in some turnips with club root. Does anyone know what happens to the garden waste before it is bagged?

The food waste collected by the council should be composted at a very high temperate to kill and seeds or pathogens.

I stick my unwanted spuds in my 'darlek' compost bin, they do sprout, but an occasional poke with a spade to break them up soon puts a stop to them.
