Title: FOX GLOVES!
Post by: Duke Ellington on July 05, 2010, 18:09:22
I sowed some foxgloves last year and this year I had a really pretty group of them in my front garden. They have now gone over and look untidy. What do I do now? How do I go about saving the seeds.

Cut them down bar one spike and tie this to a cane. When the seed cases turn brown sprinkle them round your garden, you should then have plenty. You can replant the most vigorous to where you want them. I have done this for many years and have more than enough. I have even had some that are different colours from the parent plant. I love foxgloves as they are so stately and stand head and shoulders above other plants. They do need staking as the wind can play havoc with them.

If you have a particularly nice one generally if you cut it down you will get them to flower next year - as I understand with Bi ennials ( not sure about spelling)you will only get one more year out of them, It's worked for me at the Lotti, but I find in my small garden it needs to big a footprint to leave in the ground so I generally so fresh seed but if you are saving your own seed as queenbee said because of cross pollination they will not always come true.
