Title: We've a pheasant sitting on eggs in our plot!
Post by: Halfalot on June 28, 2010, 17:25:06
Hi

We were at the plot the other day, strimming the overgrown corner when out flew a pheasant hen. On closer inspection she was on a next containing 10 eggs. I guess sooner or later we will have babies - I don't know what to do (if anything) as I don't fancy them all running about to eat our young and tender veg!

Ideas?

Thanks

Place an old glass window over the nest and later you'll have
pheasant under glass ;D

Leave them alone. Hopefully the hen pheasant has returned to the nest and has continued to brood the eggs. The pheasant chicks will not eat the plants, they feed on small insects.
If the hen pheasant has not returned do you know anyone with a broody hen. If the eggs have not become too cold resulting in the death of the embryo then they will hatch successfully and the broody hen will rear them until they get big enough to fly away and lead an independent life.

The hen is still sitting on the eggs and seems quite snug in the area we've left for her. I'll let you know of any developments, and please don't fret - we have left them alone!

There is a pheasant hen on our plot. She just eats insects and doesn't seem interested by the veg. I find them to be very pretty.

My son and his wife had a pheasants nest in the corner of the meadow which adjoins their garden this year and they've now hatched and coming through the fence - whilst their main food may be insects, they are very fonds of strawberries - in fact I think its the birds generally who have got most of their strawberries - even though they were covered.  Their garden is a haven for birds, at least two families of blackbirds, long tailed tits, blue and geat tits, two families of greater spooted woodpeckers, jays and more, including lots of pheasants - one of whom manages to eat from a bird feeder by flying onto the ground standing feeder stand - quite comical to watch.
