Title: bolthardy spinach has bolted
Post by: Karen Atkinson on June 28, 2010, 13:10:59
I sowed seeds of a 'bolthardy' spinach but have left them too long befor getting around to transplant. Have noticed (and they're only about 2 inches high) that they've got yellow tiny flowers growing at leaf junctions from main stem.

I've removed them and planted them out anyway. Did I waste my time? Will they recover?

not called 'bolting' for nothing unfortunately and once a plant has 'decided' to go to seed it seems not much will stop it - it is going to be a year for this sadly as it is so hot and dry and spinach especially is a cool climate plant

sow again when it gets cooler

I think it's better to sow autumn/winter varieties once the hours of daylight start to reduce in July.  I don't think it's just the heat and dryness, but spinach seems prone to bolting in June whatever the variety.

It happens-sow early and sow late but not mid season
