Title: More Economical Fuel
Post by: Larkshall on June 27, 2010, 22:55:38
I have been keeping a spreadsheet (since last November) on the cost of fuel (electricity) in comparison with the propane gas and electricity of the previous 12 months. The average per week is down £6.81 that equates to £354.12 for a year.

I'm very glad I changed to all Electric.

Yes I have heard that electricity is now cheaper than gas

Does this mean that we should all go for night storage heaters?

I've been wondering whether it would be cheaper to have my immersion heater on a timer and my gas off completely at this time of year, as I only have the gas on for an hour each morning and evening and use the immersion if I someone wants a bath. What do you think?

Savings like this are only possible if you carefully monitor which rooms you need to use, keeping those at a suitable temperature. Keep the thermostats on "frost free" or just above for other rooms. Night storage heaters are very wasteful when a very warm day follows as you've already heated the heater and that heat is wasted.

Bathrooms are different to all other applications. You must not have electrical sockets in a bathroom, the heaters to use in a bathroom are sealed panel heaters or oil filled splashproof radiators. I also use instant water heaters so water is only heated as you want it.

Also if you have all electric, you don't need to pay the gas standing charge every month.
