Title: What is this?
Post by: Mushy Pea on June 27, 2010, 15:19:01
We bought a horse radish last year and at first thought we had lost it but on closer inspection I think we have a triffid too.  :o

I think the horse radish is on the left with artichokes on the right but the wierdy is in the middle.

This is the flower head.

Any clues as to what it is?  ???

Many thanks for your advice.

If it is a weed it is a very impressive one.

Teasel.  It's quite the year for them.  Leave it, the finches love the seeds.

The horseradish is the one that looks like a dock, under the teasel.

If you leave the teasel to seed, you will never get rid.

for me the teasle is wonderful not only for birds but quite dramatic flower arranging as well - hopefully there is always room for plants like this on our plots and gardens   ;)

I love teasels though not in my garden.  I love the way the flowers go round the flower head and gradually move upwards.

Same here Digeroo. The bees follow the flowers too. I watched one a couple of years ago & it was on the flower for a couple of hours. Wonderful.

I've had success with teasels this year at last, but the tips on some of them have gone brown and dry. Do you think this could have been caused by frost- they are the ones on the end of the row so maybe more exposed.
