I grew this rose from a cutting that I got from my moms garden. She had taken the cutting from a climber that was growing in the house she had over 50 years ago. It seems to be disease free. Only problem is that it has no scent. I have only ever seen another which closely resembled it and that one was climbing up a cottage at Sandwell Valley farm. It must be an old variety.(http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s121/shirlton/rose.jpg)
It looks something like one my mother in law had in her garden. Is it rampant and flowers twice each year with the old one in between? Hers was called Albertine. According to my very old copy of Rose Expert it has 20 petals.
Thats very strange cos her husbands name was Albert and he had lived in the house before Mom met him. Wil go count the petals in amo
There are others with the same number of petals but if it has more or less presume you can rule it out. I was unaware that a parpticular rose always had the same number of petals.
My husband thinks that his mother brought the rose with her from London and that her father had it as a cutting from somewhere he worked.
I think it has gone out of favour because it is rather rampant and also newer varieties are bred to have a longer flowering period.
My daughter lives in the house now so I will ask her to also count the petals.
Sorry it has 33 petals digeroo.
Just noticed Rose Expert (Hessayon and Wheatcroft) cost 2/6d. (13p). Though the current book at £7 is considerably thicker.
I was just interested if by chance anyone else had the rose as its an old un. I will give it the name Albert after my step father ;D
