A friend, well a freecycler actually, gave us a large bag of Tulip bulbs that we need to grow on. They are the small bulbs split from a larger one, probably between the size of a runner bean seed and a golf ball.
My question is do we plant them now or later. They obviously need to fill out for a year or two before flowering. I was wondering about growing them several to a large pot, or perhaps in the polytunnel beds.
Any advice welcomed.
I read somewhere that if they're kept quite deep, they flower better, and that keeping them near the surface encourages them to keep splitting.
Does that help?
ipt8,
I have several types of tulips and will keep them in pots for most of the season.
I also keep them in the pots for drying out after they have gone over.
All you do is sink them in where you want the colour and hey presto, after they come out replace with another plant of your choosing.
Hi
Definately plant them as they stay dormant until after the winter but keep the moisture in.
tulips hate winter wet so just find somewhere thats well drained but in sun in the winter, or if its not ideal but a handful of gravel under them to help the drainage.
Or stick them in a pot until they shoot in the spring.

Thanks sunloving that about answers the question. We are on greensand so will plant fairly deep and let them get on with it, and also some in pots to compare results.
I bought some tulip bulbs in Holland this Spring, they didnt produce any flowers this year when planted in pots. I have picked them out of the compost as there was some rotten ones, but there are lots of tiny bulblets. Not sure if I should leave these to dry until Autumn or should I plant them out? Whats your advice about tulips in pots? Thanks
