Title: chicory
Post by: aquilegia on June 20, 2010, 16:40:23
I've only ever had witloof chicory and didn't like it. It was far too bitter.

But I love the flowers! I saw in a certain hardware store that they had salad chicory. Is this sweeter than witloof chicory? Does it produce flowers?

What's a good variety to get? (I want to buy seeds rather than the plants they had)

sorry to ask a stupid question-you did force the roots of your whitloof? not eat the leaves of it as a green leaf?

I didn't grow them, they were in my veg box. They were white.

there are a lot of varieties but all tend to be slightly bitter (can be enhanced according to dressing) and I love them all and grow as many as possible,  especially love the radicchio types, red and white, ballhead or slender - yes the flowers are lovely, always blue?, best thing to do is experiment - Franchi Seeds have a good selection but I hope you can get the like their flavour, such a fantastic salad ingredient and can be cooked as well

Fair enough-they were chicons then. not to everyone`s taste but home forced are a bit sweeter-well not sweet as such but not bitter either
