Hi all!
I'm new here, but have been dabbling in my small garden for a couple of years now! Recently decided to grow my veg in an allotment not far from where I live. Spent the last couple of weekends just getting it ready so I start growing, but i'm not sure what's best to plant now - any suggestions?
I'm thinking of herbs to start of with but i'm open to your ideas!
thanks! ;D
Hi Ace and a big welcome to A4A
Herbs are a great idea but you could get in some tomato plants and salads.
We have just put in courgette plants and cucumbers. I think you still have loads of time for a good harvest. I'm sure you'll get loads of advice from all the green fingers on this forum.
Congratulations on getting your allotment. Exciting isn't it!
Have a great summer.
First of all...make list what veg you actually eat/use,,,and then you can start finding out when are those grown...
But you can still sow carrots, salads, peas, beans, courgettes, potatoes (that's if you can get hold of some to start with), spring onions, basil, winter/spring cabbage and caulis, turnips, cohl rabi, cumbers will still make it too..oh lots and lots...now is good time to sort bed for strawberries..that's if you want to grow those..as established plants are starting to send runners and lot of people will be cutting out those just to throw away..so start being friends with your neighbours.. ;)
don't forget a lot of the garden centres and even places like B&Q still have vegetable seedlings in and most are selling them off cheaply now. It could be worth buying a few of these and sticking them in to give you a bit of a head start
Hi and welcome, tons of stuff you can get in still, have fun good to have you with us XX Jeannine
The first thing I looked for was your location.
Most people here are in the UK but some are elsewhere in the world.
I can only help if I know where you are to start with.
If you are in the UK my initial suggestion is to clear the ground and pile high as much muck as you can to rot down to make good soil for next year.........Set out the beds, shed and an area where you can sit. Make cold frames.
It is very frustrating when starting out. A strawberry plant or two will provide loads of new plants for next year. Wintergreens can be started now in a seed bed.
But honestly, the best thing to do it to get everything ready to start in winter/spring ready for next year. Make sure the area is as weed free as you can.
beetroot, turnips, radish, courgettes, squash, pumpkin, leeks, chard, lettuce. Lots!
Now is a great time for planting/sowing lots of things. I am getting my brassicas planted out at the moment maybe people have some to spare.
Throw in some packets of seeds and see what happens.
Ace of Spades I hope you enjoy your allotment as much as I do mine.
you'll love it! Welcome and happy growing!
Welcome to the site :)
As others have said really, just chuck it all in and see what grows, anything that does not grow in time can be used on the compost heap. Green manure is another good one to grow.
Put a wanted add in your local freegle/freecycle, i did a couple of weeks ago and within an hour I had approx 200 plants. I took about 20 and the rest went to the rest of the plot holders. You could also put a wanted add on the allotment notice board, I'm sure you would have plenty of offers.
Remember to take lots of pictures and put them on here to show your progress.

went in my local focus this morning and they are clearing there seed tatties at 10p a bag might be worth getting if they got some close to you (mines Crystal peaks Sheffield)
Hi everyone!
thanks for the great comments! ;) so much to do - so little time!!
the allotment ive got is quite big but not really in a good state - will probably follow purple heathers advice and get it all sorted before i start experimenting. have bought myself a new rotavotr to help me (i admit, do love my gadgets ;D)
in the meantime, i could do with getting some seeds and pants with an ad, will have to check if theres a freecycle/ noticeboard in my local area..
Putting a few plants in a small area that you've cleared will give you a feeling of progress and renew your energy for the next lot of clearing.
