Title: Re: Cutting down on winter squash seeds.

Brown owl you are right, I was going to send one parcel with everyones chosen choices clearly marked with their names  to one person rather than send out loads of envelopes from here, suggesting that folk then sent a sae to claim their seeds to  the person receiving the package.

I also have some eggplants, tons of  melons, brassicas, some roots, tomatoes, gourds and probably more.

I need to cut down my seeds and you guys might as wel have them, but bear in mind some are older..I don't want any probs further down the line, I am not Thompson and Morgan LOL

So list will stretch to other veggies....

I will leave it another couple of days to see what else folks might be interestd in.

I am trying to keep it as little a job as I can so don't be afraid to show interest in more than one or two.

Don't PM me yet ;D ;D

Some I have lots of  some only a few spare.

If you want any of the above, please PM  your full name and  address now !!.   ;D

When a variety runs out I will post here.

I will TRY  to send 8/10 of your choice.

If there is a lot of requests I  will post the entire lot to someone in the UK, to claim your seeds that will have your name on, you will need to send a SAE to the person who it goes to. I don't want that kind soul to have to pay out all the postage.

Thank you for those who have asked but I don't need anything in return.

I will be posting more as I sort them out.

I was in too much pain to lay down although very tired and light headed due to meds, happens sometimes, so I  didn't go to bed at all  last night . I sat up and sorted seeds in a recliner.

I really excelled myself, however I did get the PM so did something right.

Jeannine..those two seed companies you mentioned..superseeds and rareseeds..did you order from them when you were still in UK?
Title: Re: Cutting down on winter squash seeds.
Post by: Jeannine on June 18, 2010, 19:32:18
Yes, all the time, and many others did on my recommendation. Better known as Pinetree and Cedar Creek.

Jere Kettle who runs Cedar Creek only charged $3 a parcel for shipping even to the UK unless of course you bought really heavy stuff like lots of beans, but for regular seeds it goes for that. You get a freebie too and he is very speedy. I got a $5  bill in my parcel once because he was out of a seed I had ordered that was $3. He has a forum too!! Interesting history.

So what are you going to buy!!!

Another good one is Two Wings Farm, not big but have some interesting stuff.

Westcoast seeds is my local   here, only keep seeds that grow in this area which is much like the UK.Postage is higher though.

Tomato Growers Supply.. is a great site for toms. aubs, peppers. They have a flat rate for postage too. A couple of years ago a group of us from A4A did a parcel together.

Sandhill Preservation Society is a cool site ..they have chooks too but not for airmail to the UK. They are slow though.

Tatianas Tomatoes if you don't already know it is a dream of a site, 10  minutes drive from me.Her database is excellent.

Too much info???

There are more  ;D

I have only heard of realseeds in the UK and rareseeds in the US.

Bump..I am starting to bag seeds.I have not been able to reply to all the e mails I have got..sorry.

I know many of you have sent messages that you are still looking varieties up.

I have requests WITH addresses from the following people.

JayB
Galina
Tricia
Tatty
TinShed
vjm 63
manicscowsers
Twoflowers
Stevens706
Spudbash
Lottiedolly

If your name is not on the list, it could  because you probably didn't send an address WITH the list on the same PM.I keep the copies that A4A direct  to  my home e mail address in a folder to use and don't keep incomplete ones in there as it gets too unmanageable. Please assume I don't have your requests if not on this list.

I will be sending this parcel out by the end of June so if your are still looking, this is a last chance hint ;D

I will do my best to give everything they wanted, the list above is not in any order by the way.

I will confirm there are seeds for you of course when the packing is complete, there are a heck of a lot of seeds to pack so bear with me.

Firstly, a big THANK YOU  :-*

secondly, what type of squash is that in your picture, is that crook neck squash, i am only asking as i am growing it for the first time this year and my babies look similar to your mature ones in the picture, if not what type of squash is it as it looks interesting.

big hugs

It is Pennsylvania Crook Neck,  it is a winter squash, tan , butternut family, not a Crooked Neck summer one which is kindof bottle shaped with the narrow part bent over with a warty yellow skin. They are two distinct types.

I grow pumpkins successfully here in Nantes where we have a climate not that different to the UK. It rains a lot and summer is not THAT hot. For Northern UK I don't know, but squash doesn't always need that much heat to grow I find, much less than say melons... DOes Jeannine agree with me on that?

I feel as if I cannot ask people for seeds as I have none to give back to them, or only very banal shop bought seeds.

Antipodes, I can post to you direct, I am posting to several countries anyway.

The question about heat,  winter squash  will do quite well in a regular UK summer as long as it is warm, long, not too wet, and are started in good time, they will grow faster in hotter weather though, whereas melons must have it  which is why most of them are better under glass.

Jayb the squash that looks like a penguin is a Chicago Warted.

Jeannine - you must be spending a fortune on us A4Allers. Is there any small thing my sister could bring back for you when she visits me in September?

OK, I have filled all the requests for those folks who sent a list an address, they are  all going in a box to a UK addy and will be posted from there. Most of you got what you asked for although some had run out..I took them in the order I got the full info. I am sorry but I did not have time to choose for anyone. John was filling bags etc and we only had time to do the straight forward ones, so if anyone asked for something for a shady area or a cool part of the UK  or generally asked me to select for them I do regret we couldn't help you. It took us hours to fill and complete as you can appreciate so simply had no time to be side tracked. I am closing this post now as parcel is almost packed ready to go and it will be too late to request.

Trica thank you for the offer, I am sure I can find something very easily and might just take you up on that, your package is going to your sisters today,Grannieannie yours is going direct to the States today.

I hope your seeds do well for you, I have others to find homes for but need a break before I start that. I will begin another post when I have them sorted out.

I will put a new post on with names of folks who I have posted to, I would be grateful if you would post there so I know they have arrived.
