Second year of trying this. Last year it grew sooo slowly, just opening one leaf at a time (with about a week in between). Plants never got big enough to hold a fruit - I did get some flowers (one per plant) but a bit of failure.
The plants are doing the same this year too. Sown 23rd March the biggest is now 6 inches high :'(
Anyboody got any tips to revive them or ideas why they are growing so poorly?
There are a few Asian shops in Gladstone street Peterborough-that`s where I get my okra.
I tried many times and we all know the story-four fruit one a plant was my personal best, and many many failures
mine are beyond pathetic this year :'(
They will ALWAYS be rubbish. Unless you have some sort of magic touch, heated greenhouse and lots of luck, they will be measly, small and tough, even assuming you can get the fruits to set. Nice flowers though. I don't zone push anymore. Why bother when there is so much we can grow easily.
I am trying okra for the first time, and have mine in a cold greenhouse, but it does not seem very happy.
I`m a little okra come and see me flower
I`m a happy okra fruit in this tropical shower
But we do not live in England
Mine are doing spiffingly, just starting to flower.
I am growing them in my plastic greenhouse which gets to 50C+ during the day.
I don't intend planting them in the ground outdoors at the moment.
See the other posts on Okra..some are very funny, but some of us made it..apart from heat , number 1 thing, it hates to be moved!!XX Jeannine
Mine have been awful, germinated at a ferocious pace, with lush green seed leaves, but the true leaves have been white and devoid of chlorophyll.
Friends in Bosnia grew it last year, it was cropping well when we visited in Aug - but they have real summers
Mine are also pathetic, but bizarrely are starting to form flowers despite not having very many leaves......not sure I will bother again!
first year growing ..Clemson spineless,, ace.. six plants.. I have some fruit about 4" long .. and others catching up ..some of the leaves go yellow I pick them off .. I have bubble wrapped inside of green house and not taken it all down as am using it as an inside sun block .. only water from below.. pots in trays.. ain't a clue why they are doing so well but dead chuffed ;D ;D ;D
