Title: Sweet corn
Post by: Paulines7 on June 12, 2010, 08:41:08
Does anyone know if it too late to plant sweetcorn seeds please?

I only have five plants that have survived after the rest were eaten.

Pauline I sowed mine last Sunday. I soaked them overnight, planted Sunday & into the propagator & they were up by Tuesday. I am hoping they will be OK as they are about 3'' now.

Joy Larkcom says sow direct when planting this month, couple of seeds per station, could be worth a go.

Pauline there is a split opinion on soaking, especially with the supersweets which are very shrunk and wrinkled as they can absorb a lot of water very fast, often the cause fr non germination. I know, I know, some folks swear about it but it is  considered a no no by plant breeders who say you are more likely to lose the seed by soaking than by not..just thought I would share that.If you read any of the various US Uni depts of agriculture thay all say the same thing.

i had never even heard of soaking - wouldn't bother as sweetcorn germinated fast but I would sow direct at this time of year.
