Title: Those pre-Christmas Events
Post by: Hugh_Jones on December 04, 2004, 17:04:23
Why is it that every Club, Society, Guild, Association or whatever, with which one has the slightest connection, feels compelled every December to hold a Christmas lunch or dinner which one is virtually obliged to attend?  These events consist inevitably of battery-reared frozen turkey from which every vestige of natural juices has been either frozen or cooked until it has reached a state of unutterable dryness and tastelessness, accompanied by lumpy bread sauce and vegetables either cooked to mush or served half raw and almost impossible for my ageing teeth to cope with.

After half a dozen or so of such dreary treats in less than 3 weeks even our own Christmas offering of fresh, free range (from the farm down the road) well hung bird, cooked (by my wife) to absolute perfection appears far less attractive.

Perhaps I`m just getting old!

Totally agree, Hugh.  Nowadays I am at the age where I am brave enough to say right at the beginning (if there isn't an alternative choice on offer) that "turkey dioesn't agree with me" (??? and no one asks why - expect they think I am a bit of a sad old woman) Then I politely ask if I can have another starter - there is almost always a choice there - or a glass of fruit juice to begin followed by a starter ;)

I have to say that I do like a good smoked happy turkey breast.

But dear wife always says 'why eat the happy ones!! = Tim

Just the usual do`s, tim, Gardeners club, computer club, old fogies etc. etc.
And as for smoked turkey, this depends on how many tobacco addicts are present.

Hugh, people at our allotment site are probably cursing me this year, as I have had the bright idea of holding a brief Christmas Event at the Allotment Shop next Sunday. This will be the first event we have ever had, so don't know if anyone will come.  It will only be for an hour and we will have some mincepies and ginger wine and a choir from the local church are coming to sing carols.  It is a bit of an experiment to see how likely people will get together, if we have any other events at the lottie, so it could turn out a complete wash out, especially if it rains next week.  (please don't let it rain!!)

Hope people don't look upon it as another Christmas chore, but I can understand if you have a lot of events to go to it must get tiresome. I am hoping against hope ours is a success and people have a good time meeting all their lottie neighbours whom they might not normally see.  Anyway, I'm crossing my fingers it's a success.  :D busy_lizzie

Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah. Guess how many Christmas dinners.events/ etc I am going to this year. ONE!!!!!!! Ours at home. And that is just about the right number too. Miserable old curmudgeons of the world unite. You have nothing to lose but your appetite. (and the last three taste buds).

In my experience Hugh, the food becomes secondary, as the gossip is often far tastier, mainly  "who's doing what, and to whom" ? ..........and that's just the Church Choir do !!  ;D   ::)   ;D

i'm not going to the 'do' for christmas at work. luckily i am on annual leave, so won't have to make excuses! i have to say that i wouldn't go anyway.
in-laws expressed shock at my statement a couple of days ago-'go on, don't be miserable', that kind of thing, but i told them that whilst i get on with people at work, as is necessary, i wouldn't want to drive for 45 minutes into the city centre, and then spend time and money with people i don't really care for that much. i find it all very false, i wouldn't at another time of year so why now?
not much fussed what people at work think of that!!
go on, call me scrooge!

Have to agree, but now this year I have drastically cut down to seeing mates and family. Seems so much nicer, after all, why go 'for drinks' with people you never see the rest of the year and get stressed 'cos you'd rather be home preparing for your own feast?
Boring maybe, happy yes!!
And a big Chirstmas lunch (with loads of friends) to look forward to, unspoilt by imitations!
Cheers! CL xx  ::)

You mean you haven't already? Mine have been on for a fortnight!  ;D

I've "doing" Christmas at my place this year for the first time, suppose I'd best get to planning the shopping soon, or there'll be nowt left in the supermarkets. People already seem to be buying food as if they're suddenly not going to be able to get to the shops for 3 months.

Only one Xmas lunch at work this year, luckily, plus our 'free' Xmas party (no big dinners there). As a veggie I don't have to face the interminable badly-cooked turkey, but a few years ago I had five Xmas lunches to go to, and the veggie alternative at each one was "nut Wellington".  :-X
