Title: How to store seed
Post by: ipt8 on June 10, 2010, 13:17:02
Have taken advantage of some half price seeds, well within use by year. I will not use most of them untill next year. What is the best way to store the seed. It is things like tomatos, peas, beans, courgette, basi, pepper  and cucumber  ???
Thanks for any advivce

Ideal would be in cool, dry environment..this could be in thick plastic bag or container with closeable lid in fridge..and if you have sachet or two of silica gel to pop in with the seeds even better..
As long as the temperature is fairly even..
I no longer be able to store in fridge..due to amount of seeds I have..so just plastic storage boxes with lids and plenty of silica gel will do fine..most seeds will easily store few years this way... ;)

I use a small plastic tool  box.  It is three seed packets wide, so with them stood up I can rifle through them like a card index.  When shut it is easy to carry around by the handle at the top.

I keep it in the garage which is always cool.

Mmm, our garage gets like an oven, its wooden boards and a tile roof. Maybe a lunch box in the fridge, our house keeps reasonably cool in summer as it is stone, but is central heated plus a log burning stove in the winter so can be quite toasty  :)
I have never bothered too much in the past but it is nice to try and do things right.  ;D

The tubes in which Steradent sterilising tablets for false teeth are are sold are ideal as the lids are air tight.
