Title: kale and cabbage plants
Post by: anemone on June 06, 2010, 21:14:22
Does anyone have any recommendations of where to buy plug plants of these? I think it's too late to sow more now.

Should I be worried about introducing club root?

My whole tray of seedlings was munched by the slugs last night. Odd, they didn't touch any at all for weeks, then suddenly all gone. Well all except one lonely tuscan kale seedling :(

my savoy cabbage say sow in june, can't help with the plugs though..some of the gardening mags (kitchen garden etc ) are advertising them...flamin' slugs get on my nerves, they've eaten 4 of my special beans  ::)

Thanks manicscousers  - I've just checked the packets and my savoy and one type of kale say to june and the tuscan kale apr-sept! so perhaps i was a bit hasty :)

The Frosty kale only says until May though and it'd be nice to have a backup in case the slugs munch the next lot too. feeling a bit disheartened on the slug front - they got my calebrase too but I do have a few more of those at home.

I have been trying the copper tape bought from ebay. I have raised beds in my poly tunnel and put a line of it around the boards on each. Usually slugs get a lettuce I am growing but so far so good, no problems for nearly a month now. I recomend it.

organicplants.co.uk are a good one. I have used them in the past & the quality was good. They do collections & include P&P in some cases.

I have only just sown Kale and have not even sown the spring cabbage yet, will do that in a week or two. I am not sure if it is really too late... They may just be smaller than they might be.

Marshalls have a collection of 2 sorts of kale, 1 cabbage and 1 white sprouting broc for £10.95.

But as they aren't sending them out till August reckon there's plenty of time to grow your own  ;D

I'm afraid I've resorted to pellets, and even though they're organic I still feel  as if I'm letting the side down a bit!  However, having seen the damage beginning to be inflicted on my baby cabbages, I just felt they deserved all the protection I can give them!

Thank you ! I hadn't seen organicplants before - it has a good selection to choose from. I have resowed mine today so hopefully i won't need to use them for the kale & cabbage.  I am quite tempted by the orientals selection though :)

gwynnethmary - i've resorted to the organic pellets already too. I'm sure the slugs think i plant out lettuces to feed them  ::)

If you want to buy young plants, try your local market.   There is often a plant/seed stall which will sell what you need at a fraction of the price you would pay at a Garden Centre.

I have an allotment in Northampton and other allotment holders leave surplus plants on a table reserved for the purpose on Sunday mornings.

All my transplants this year have been protected by used coffee grounds.
Not a single loss too slugs.
