Title: Bit of a mystery !!!!
Post by: wilko on June 04, 2010, 08:24:19
I got back off holiday to find a completely empty legumes bed ( other than weeds)  :-\

now I started my runner beans off in the greenhouse and did get lulled in to thinking the warm weather had arrived, and planted them out before i left (May 10th ish) and then lost the lot with that sharp frost  :( , so i planted direct, along with dwarf and climbing french beans and peas.

After a wonderful 10 day holiday in Ireland, i was looking forward to getting back into the garden, a neighbour watered the greenhouse and patio pots, but other than weeds there was no sign of any of the peas or beans  ???.

I've now weeded and resown the bed, I didn't find anything I'd sown !!!! no rotten beans, nothing !!

any ideas as to what could have happen, I'm stumped  :-\

does your neighbour seem at all slightly heavier or have a shifty look in his/her eyes?

possibly all three saddad and shirlton, I have had losses before from pigeons, but the whole bed !!!

I have netted the peas and dwarf beans, but I'll have to keep an eye on the runners and hope for the best this time  :-\

we watched a programme a few years ago, crows were walking along, measuring out spacing and eating beans or pea seed..they said they are very clever birds,  as if we haven't enough to think about  ::)  ;D

A bit off topic Manic - but you are so right about crows - we ended up with a crow that couldn't fly in our back yard and we fed him - when he had enough to eat he used to take the bits of meat or cheese and plank them in various places in the garden, then cover it all up with leaves!  Also if any other crows flew overhead, he used to lie down on his side as if he were dead so they wouldn't think there was any food about.  Peas or beans at regular intervals would be a piece of cake for them if you'll excuse the pun!

I lost three sowings of beetroot last season.I thought it was slugs until I netted the seedlings and the next lot grew OK. This year, I'm netting everything I can.

I had exactly the same problem, i sowed some yellow dwarf beans, when nothing came up i had a poke around, and found nothing in the soil, the soild didnt look like it had been disturbed so i ruled out mice, i reckon i sowned them a tad too early and they just rotted away.  Good thing is there is still plenty of time to sow more and i now have staggered planting as some off my others are through.

Me too. All french climbers came to nowt. This is the first year I have sowed direct and I wont be doing so again. Now replaced with runners bought from B&Q and it hurt sooo much. (no time to re-sow, away for 3 weeks on Saturday.)
