My squashs that I sowed earlier are abit leggy. Is it to late to sow?
Although you are late, you can try a late sowing.
I would try to speed up the growing time by starting off germination by pre chitting the seeds somewhere warm in kitchen roll and a plastic box.
They grow fast and whilst others are harvesting in August yours may take a month or two longer. You should still get a result before the frost. Go ahead.

last year I was delayed with all my squash planting but got good crops. The butternuts had to be harvested unripe but they did ripen really well by being left on my windowsills for a few weeks, only one had to be eaten quickly due to rot & that was because i cut the stalk too short. Ive only just eaten the last butternut from last year so its well worth trying a late crop ;D
I need to try again too. I sowed 30 seeds and only 5 popped up !
I am well behind and am just sowing mine now too, although Duke has given me a few plants, bless her :) :)
I am about to sow some Harrier Butternuts to plant out as I dig up my 1st spuds.
Says on the packet 95 days from sowing, so should be plenty of time.
Hi Anemone, Ive had low germination rates this year too, I reckon its because the temperatures keep going from one extreme to another ::)

Hardly any of mine germinated too.
I had to resort to swapping with a neighbour - but at least I have some in.
I may try to start off some more, I love me squash ;D

I sowed mine on Monday and four are through already! :)
Mine winter ones only got sown a few days ago, we weill be Ok unless an early winter comes.
Don't chuck out the leggy ones though , once they are in the ground they will sort them selves out as they grow, what seems leggy now won't in a few weeks . Even if they are semi bush ones. if you are not sure and you neme them I can tell you. I would plant them.

I've had very patchy germination with my squashes this year. The odd variety will be 100%; others in the same tray do nothing. Some produce a few seedlings, and some of these are so weak they keel over and die. I've been germinating them on a warm windowsill so temperature shouldn't have been a problem.
I'm glad to hear all these replies, because we've just been dragooned into the local school fete at the end of June and told we can sell plants. So I've just sown the rest of my packets of courgettes & Baby Bear pumpkins, hoping they'll: a) be ready to sell, and; b) produce a good crop.
