Title: Netbook driving me mad!
Post by: caroline7758 on June 03, 2010, 07:57:43
I recently got a new laptop- a netbook from M&S. It's great compared to my old laptop which used to take forever to do anything and was gradually dying, but the keys are very close together because of its size, and I find the cursor seems to leap around in mid-sentence so i suddenly lose some words or find I've gone back to the last sentence. is it something I'm doing or could it be a fault with the computer? Curiously, as i've written this it hasn't done it at all!

Probably the touchpad Caroline..
Sometimes it is really easy for a sleve or something to touch the pad and it will of course then move the cursor - very annoying.
It could be that the touch pad is faulty..

So watch to see if anything is touching the pad as you type if so sometimes there is a little app which will control the sensitivity of the pad...

I often attach an external mouse to my lap/netbook because it generally disables the touchpad (though not always)..

I always have to use a mouse with our notebook as the touch pad is just too small & too sensitive compared to the old larger laptops we've had

Thanks, I'll try a mouse and see if it makes a difference.

you can change the sensitivity of the touch pad.  I love mine to be sensitive, as I am used it it, so like to be able to move full screen with one movement of the finger, but this can be changed (my partners laptop is very insensitive... and I have to move my finger across the pad several times to get the cursor across the screen)

Can someone tell me how to change the sensitivity of the touch pad, please? I realised that using a mouse won't help as the problem occurs when I am typing, and the touch pad is still active when I have the mouse plugged in.

Depends on the make/model but try looking in Control Panel - there may be something in there under mouse or touchpad..

I've got a Samsung netbook which is brill, keyboard is 95% normal size and I've doubled its RAM so its really quick.. but its touchpad is rubbish. Its very small and its really easy to accidentally hit the scroll function which is hidden on the right of the touchpad. Using it really is a test of patience. Suggest going into control panel and seeing if any uneccesary functions are enabled on your touchpad  (these will differ according to the laptop) and getting a mouse if all else fails (as I have done!)

Assuming that this is the correct device, this is their support page.

I have skimmed through their manual that you can download as a PDF but not see any help with this.
I wouldn't normally say this but you may have to ring their help line.

Thanks for your help but I can't find anything on Control Panel.

If you are using XP -Switch to classic view and mouse settings should be visable.
If you are still having issues you can try one of these two apps.  I cant vouch personally but others I know have tried them..

http://touchfreeze.googlecode.com/files/TouchFreeze-1.0.2.msi

both little apps disable the touchpad when you are typing...should help..

Thanks so  much for going to all this trouble for me. I'll try those suggestions but think I'll wait until my OH gets home on Saturday in case I mess up!
