We never stop learning in the garden world. We had a very hard frost about 2 weeks ago and although I saved every thing I had outside in pots with cold water, I did not get round to spraying my potatoes so they got badly hit. They are now recovering and today I see that one variety Cara must be much hardier than Rocket. The Cara hardly show any bad effect whereas Rocket is cut almost to groung level and only just starting to regrow. Because I held some Rocket sets back for a competition some where planted on each side of the Cara so positions has not made any difference.
Hi Laurieuk,
Yes I agree we learn things everyday in our gardens. I have been growing potatoes for more that 20 years, I usually try different varieties and I have my favourates. This year I bought a few Rooster potatoes as I had not grown them before. I live in the north of England and we also had some frost when they were just poking though, it did not do too much harm. The Roosters are head and shoulders taller than the rest of my varieties. I only hope that what's underground are doing as well. Last year I had a good crop but on cooking, some of the potatoes went very mushy and were only fit for mashing, do you know why this might have happened? I have looked in my books but can find no information. They all stored very well and lasted until mid January. I would appreciate your comments on this.
Regards queenbee
Hi Qeenbee,
I cannot comment on Rooster as I have never grown them but all potato varieties very in taste and texture according to the soil they are grown in. A friend at the other end of our village grows nothing but Foremost but in our sol it is a waste of effort. I think we all have to find what suits us i taste and cooking qualites
