Title: Onions going to seed?
Post by: katynewbie on June 01, 2010, 20:20:47
My Stutgarter onions have been growing steadily and looking happy enough, but over the last few days 3 of them have gone and got those little seed heads on them. Is it because we have had a long dry spell? They were grown from sets.

Any check be it a dry spell or very cold can trigger onions running to seed. All you need do is pick the seed head off as soon as you see it the onion will then grow on bid enough to use but will not keep. Manu of my autumn planted sets are showing seed haeds after such a bad winter. Many of our vegetables are bi annuals so after a check they tend to react as if it is their second year.
