i am new at this planted some swedes but didnt grow very well only small and at a angle any tips pls cheers mutty
We grow swedes every year and this year they arenot as big as usual, think I didn't thin them out soon/far enough initially but that may not be the reason. The biggest (and there aren't many) are about the size of a training football/small melon but taste great anyway. The small ones I still pick, dice and freeze for adding to soups. Remember swedes stay in the ground until Jan/Feb anyway tho I don't expect them to grow much more I'll still leave them there as they are better when they get "frosted".
Growing at a slant could be because they weren't thinned soon enough ???
Like everything else in an allotment - some years they do some years they don't!!
My swedes and 'nips were a total washout! I belive swedes are a little tricky to grow and like to be grown enmasse...yeah, cos like they know...cos like they chat to their neighbours and say, 'hi swede over there, how are you doing?'
However, 'snips were and are absolutely wonderful, so still have seeds so will try harder next year!
What soil are you on. I do not grow any swedes as I have a clay soil, my father in devon grows the most amazing swedes on a sandy soil so we get a couple of nets of swedes from him through the winter and store them in a clamp and they keep perfectly.
In the days of the old covent garden veg market Devon swedes of the variety Devon Glory always attracted a premium from the buyers, especially those grown on the red soil of the South Hams.
