Title: Any uses for old shower curtains?
Post by: caroline7758 on May 23, 2010, 14:49:27
I have two old shower curtains, both beyond salvaging due to mildew. Can anyone think of a use for them on the plot? They are both fabric rather than plastic.

Useful for spreading out when filling or emptying pots.  Easy to pick up and funnel compost back into a sack.

Sun screen for S side of a green house.

Covering soil to warm it up ready to sow seeds or to protect it from heavy rain leeching out the nutrients in the winter.

Any more anyone?

Shade in the greenhouse.  Put a washing line inside along the roof ridge and the angle of the side.  The fabric sits behind the line against the glass and away from the plants.

Send them up north for the poor. They only bathe or shower once a year so they should last for  a few more years yet. Don't worry about the mildew, they will blend in a treat.

Unfortunately both my greenhouses are far more shaded than I would wish for already!
Might be able to use them for some of the other suggested things, though- thanks for the ideas.

how about using them for wind breaks to shelter some tender stuff
or to use when emptying your compost bins / turning them over, load the contents onto one of the sheets etc

If they are not completely transparent, you might be able to use them as weed killer: spread thick layers of cardboard then your shower curtain then weigh it down. It will hold down teh cardboard long enough to kill weeds so you can reduce digging ;-)

I have used old shower curtains as weed suppressant and they did the job well. :)

IF, like us you have strawberries in the greenhouse, you could hang them over the greenhouse doorway in order to keep the blackbird family out. ;D

Well I wasn't sure if I should feel insulted, on three counts......

I'm new around here, I'm a Southerner and I am now living in the North!

Oh dear redcoat, no offence intended, it was just meant as a bit of a joke, speaking as a Midlander.

Please don't let it put you off the site, it is really very friendly.

A belated welcome.

I'm a Southerner and I am now living in the North!

I can never get over why people move up to the frozen wastelands of the north. You are a lot better off on the sunny sarf coast.

I do go up there sometimes, mainly to throw a few pennies around for the raggyarse urchins to chase after and spread a few shillings around the pubs and pie shops. Just sharing a bit of our southern wealth around amoungst the poor unfortunates who are trapped up there living on offal and who can't even afford a real dog, they have to make do with whippets.  You are slightly better off if you have a cat.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Northerner takes his cat to the vet.

northerner: "Ayup, lad, I need to talk to thee about me cat."

Vet: "Is it a tom?"

northerner: "Nay, I've browt it with us."

Being from Portsmouth I guess that makes me a soft southener.
Did live in Newcastle for three years and loved every minute of it.
Guess what we should do with Ace is make a raft and use those old shower curtains for sails and push him off into the Solent, never to be heard from again. Bye Bye Ace watch out for those needles!!!!!!

Bin liner!

LOL am having a few 'debates' with my new lottie sharer, she loves to recycle household items.. but I think theres nothing worse than a plot full of car tyres, toilets, carpets etc. I think a shower curtain might get accidentally on purpose blown away one night  ;)

I love your northern jokes Ace.
As a Northerner now living in South Wales I agree its grim 'oop North.
your jokes remind me so much of my now diseased Dad who had an accent as thick as pig sh1t as they say in the North.

Oh, don't worry, after many years out in the elements, I rather thick skinned.  I should really have added a few  :D :) ;) :D :) ;)  I posted with tongue firmly in cheek.

Manouche, I've been in Newcastle for about 4 years now and am lovin' it.  Grew up in Plymouth, worked my way up the country, including a while in Waterlooville, spent many years in Herts and here I am.

Thanks to everyone for being really friendly.
