For some reason, my leek germination (in modules) has been rubbish this year. Can I still sow now, if so would they be best in modules or straight in the ground, and which variety would you recommend for now?
Yes, I would still sow....although they might not make into whopper-size gategory but you should still get desent ones..
I would sow on tray and as soon as they are big enough for you to handle..transplant into ground...
Any variety you have...if we get mild winter they will still grow and you'll get larger ones next spring.. ;D ;)
I have just got some that has poked their heads out i would recommend you start them in a plant pot then there is no potting on and you get a good root system

My leeks are slow this year but have just noticed a tub I filled with them last week are coming up nicely, and well spread out, am aiming for small tender leeks this year
Germination of leeks this year has proven to be poor for me that is..I was begining to think it was just Me!...I've now sown my third batch to get the quantaty I require for this season...Each time I've sown I have used mushroom baskets lined with newspaper, they are nice and deep, more room for the roots to develope. (ps the big blue type )
Used the same method for many a year now. If need be I'd certainly sow some more, even this late, as they always seem to catch up...perhaps not as big..but very usable...how many times do you see 'baby leeks' forsale in the shed-supermarkets..... ;) ;) go for it...you will be planting them as your 1st tatties come out... ;)
Thanks everyone, I'll get out to the greenhouse and sow some more now! Digindeep, you have reminded me that I used a mushroom crate last year- maybe that's where I've gone wrong this year!
Mushroom punnets of all sizes and Morrison`s flower buckets-where would we be without them?
Not too late for leeks-the old lore was to put them in where the early spuds came out
I don't know where I saw it but it was suggested to sow leeks in the deep pots that roses are sold in. Mine have germinated well in one but after reading this I might sow some more.
When I cleared my leeks in the Spring there were some small offshoots which I saved, and have set out like onion sets. I wonder if they will make big leeks or bolt to seed. Oh well! either way they'll be useful.
