Title: Plants sprouting upside down
Post by: Tatty on May 22, 2010, 10:27:07
I mentioned this on another post but did not have a suitable pic - this has now happened again and I have tried to get a pic

My runner beans are trying to grow upside down - in the fact that the root is coming up and no sign of the leaves/shoot? about 5 of them that I had sowed in seed compost in peat pots have had the root coming up instead of down?

Turn them up the other way and see what happens.

Maybe you didn't plant them deep enough? They make huge seedlings and need a bit of depth

I agree, it does look as if the seeds are a bit shallow.  The root is already looking for 'down' though.

Tease it out with an old dining fork (I keep one just for potting) or lolly stick or something; then either make a deeper hole in that pot or use a bigger one.

Thank you for replies - I think you are right - the pots are the smallest peat ones you can get (I think).

I have dug down and up turned a few of them - will pot them on I think into bigger pots and leave them to find their way!

500ml yoghurt pots are a good size for beans.

I had this, planted too shallow.
The pot was big enough, and I was curious, so I just let them be, and a few days later they had managed to turn the right way up.
