Title: Hollow onion sets
Post by: Lizann on May 14, 2010, 17:19:25
I planted my onion sets in modules quite a while ago and they sprouted well and have formed great roots.  However, when planting them out the bulbs feel hollow as if they are rotten.  Is this normal or should I compost them???   ???

As long as they're growing they're OK. The old bulb is used as food to get them started, the new one has yet to develop.

Good point Robert. I was at the lottie and gave my onion sets a squeeze and they were not firm. I put it down to lack of water, did the decent thing and gave them a drink and suppressed an urge to rip them out.
