I sowed some sweetcorn a week ago and most of them have germinated. They were looking fine but some of the leaves have started to go black and have shrivelled up. The stem is fine and hasn't rotted. Does anyone know what this could be? I have never had a problem growing sweet corn before.
If this continues to happen do I have time to sow more ...just in case!! :-\
Duke :'(
Certainly time to sow more, I will be doing my second lot at the weekend now temperatures are getting there or there abouts.
Sounds like they may have been frosted? They're not very hardy so even lowish temperatures may affect them?
Mine are in a plastic greenhouse, not confident enough to harden them off yet.

Sounds like they have caught a cold to me!

Where are the located and what temperatures are they subjected to?

Yes!
The sweetcorn is in the conservatory and sitting inside a plastic mini greenhouse.
I put them in the mini greenhouse because the conservatory gets really cold during the night. Also inside the mini greenhouse there are two heated propagators inside which I have some squashes germinating so there is some gentle heat during the night.
I will take a picture shortly and post it .
Looking for clues;

They might have been too wet and humid!
I keep mine on bottom heat without any covering until they are about 2"-3" high and get plenty of light and air around them!
So your heated propagator with the lid off might be the answer.
You could put the lid on overnight if temperatures aer forecast to be low and take it off again in the morning!
Here is a picture of the sweetcorn leaf.

Is the growing tip between the two outer leaves OK? I can't quite make it out.
If it is then all should be OK.
Are only one or two plants affected?
What's in my mind is; they may have been nearest to the ouside of the bunch and have either got sun scorched or frosted, i.e. touching the side of the greenhouse.
As I said I can't quite make it out.
