What do people think about radios on allotments?
Fine..as long it is in GH and not heard by others...I have one and I take great pleasure by having a chance for uninterupted listening while pricking seedlings etc. but I find it so irritating if I have to listen somebody's else programs...I rather hear the birds while I'm outdoors...grumpy...me? ;) ;D ::)
earphones ;D
I like the sound of birdsong - so not a fan

I'd sooner sit and garden in peace thanks.
don't much care - i am largely oblivious when gardening.
Sorry to say the digital ones are no good around here. Weak signal and small amount of channels to choose from. Give me the old battery or the new wind up version to hear and I shall be on Radio 4 for the farming today and weather reports throughout the day.
Other channels are Radio 2, and If I could it has to be Classic FM.
Should not be allowed at all. You are there to work, not dance. I would find it very irritating. Only one thing worse, a WHISTLER!
I wouldn't like it frankly..why, cos other folks music can't be my choice and I choose depending on my mood. I wouldn't do it for the same reason.

Same here. Don't know why people need radios on the allotment, there's such a good choice of portable devices with earphones, no one else need to have the cricket/football/latest music foisted upon them from the next plot or garden. ;) ;) ;)
GQT, quietly, on a Sunday afternoon, by the allotment shed with a cuppa?? Bliss!

Yeah, I enjoyed the Archers omnibus whilst weeding on Sunday. I think R4 should be allowed... and perhaps R7 if you have a digital one.

I have to agree but if I wanted to listen I would use MP3 with radio with headphones.....though I like to hear who's creeping up on me so I don't.
I'm frequently annoyed by my own phone ringing because the ringtones are extracts from mp3's even though I've chosen them I get grumpy that someone's playing music too loud then realise too late it's my phone ringing in my pocket! :-[
I use the radio on my phone with earplugs. I find I get fed up of weeding. digging etc much less quickly if I'm listening to something!
I use an MP3 with radio and head phones. Heart FM (was Essex FM) until 10.00am and then over to radio 4.At WE Archers omnibus.I like it to relieve the monotony of digging/weeding. When I go down to allotment I spend a day there, usually 2 days a week all year round unless its raining hard.
Like Ninny I just like to just hear the birds singing. :)
I don't think anyone has the right, wether at the allotment or at home, to play anything that leaves the audible confines of your own area, your neighbours should not have to have anything forced on them, it is quite simply rude. I can't even imagine another side to that.

Just thought I would check that we weren't being old fuddy duddies ;). We went to daughters plot last weekend, 20 mile drive. The family on the next plot, 3 generations had the radio on & were quite loud. We gave up & came home but as it's not our site don't know what the rules are. I don't think we'll go at the weekend again ::)

What a shame you're not my neighbour. She thinks that because she 'pays her mortgage' she can do what she wants in her house. Her dogs barking at all hours do my head in but I should be grateful as they protect my property apparently lol.
I occasionally listen to music in the garden but always keep the volume to barely audible so it doesn't travel beyond the confines of my garden. If I want it any louder, like when I need to break the monotony of cutting the grass then its ipod and headphones.
shonam - you do know there is environmental health legislation to stop the dogs barking?! I think it's the 1990 act...

control of pollution act?
I use my radio all the time on the allotment, but only with headphones. I would hate to miss Womans hour or the afternoon play. I would surely hate it if I had to listen to someone elses radio though, and I think I would have to say something.

I phoned environmental health about it a few years ago. They said they come out and measure the 'noise' over half an hour or something. They take measurements from three different rooms in the house but the legislation says it has to be with the windows closed but since the barking is a nuisance in the summer when we have all the windows open it was a bit pointless. I spoke to a few people who were all very sympathetic but couldn't do much. I was told that if we were both in council houses they had more control over the situation. Really frustrating. They're a really scummy family who think they're all that. I'm sure you know the type...Needless to say its rottweilers. Not to say I have anything against rotties - just the way some people use them as status dogs when they can be such lovely pets in the right hands...
