Title: peas flowering?
Post by: pookienoodle on May 05, 2010, 18:37:30
I planted douce provence peas in modules in the house and they have been outside for about a week, they are only about 10 inches tall but some of them are flowering.
This isn't normal is it?

The guy on the plot next to me has had his peas in for a while and they have flowers on now, they will either be ok or not!! He seems very relaxed about it though...

If they're still in modules they're probably flowering early due to lack of root room. Plant them out!

Sorry if I didn't explain myself properly.
I started indoors in modules, hardened off and they have been in the ground for a week or so.

Is douce a dwarf or a tall and is it wrinkled or round?... It would be unusual in a tall wrinkled but hardly unexpected in a dwarf round.....

It's short and round seeded. Don't panic, it's probably growing normally.

Thanks all.
I didn't think they would be that dinky.

Have just checked and yes, mine have started flowering too.  At about the same height.  Perfectly normal for Douce Provence, it seems.  And nothing to be concerned about.

It just proves that peas are cool weather vegetables, as opposed to beans which require a lot more warmth to produce flowers.  Last week we had either a slight frost or just above, apart from last night which was warmer.  Yet several  of my peas are flowering ok even at such low temperatures.
