Title: Variegated Garlic
Post by: :( on May 04, 2010, 21:21:52
Im growing garlic from cloves that were saved last year from bulbs I grew from veg stall bought garlic. This year one plant has come through with variegated leaves, half the leave  is white and half green lengthwise. Its quite attractive really. Why would one clove be different from the others and will it give variegated plants if I save from it again? Anybody know?

Thanks for replies. Thats a bit of a dilemma, if its a virus I wouldnt want to save it for growing next year but if its not a virus Id like to keep it because its attractive!

Probably is a virus. It may continue through to the next generation or not, who knows. Could be like the virus that causes colour breaks in tulips.

If it was mine I would find somewhere I could grow it on next season, in isolation. If you're not prepared to try it send me some cloves and I'll give it a go.

Thanks trikidiki. If it survives Ill harvest it and grow some on at home instead of the plot. If you pm your name and address when theyre ready Ill send you a couple of cloves to try growing on.
