My mum received her first Christmas card today! Not from a company either, but a chum. Too soon! Anyone else received any yet?
no! and they wouldn't get put up if i did! rather cross that wilko's have shifted their garden stuff for rows and rows of awful singing children's toys, what a cacophony!
Had one a couple of days ago actually.
In fairness it was from a friend in Finland & he was sending some money with it. It's in Finnish so I can only presume from the snow covered tree on the front that it's a christmas card ;D
Wilko's is a nightmare now - all those singing reindeer. Where's the shuddering smiley?
Ava took me to the local nursery yesterday to finish of my birthday pressies with 3 lovely ferns for the woodland area under our willow tree, and the nursery is now Santas grotto with lights, sparkly things and full size robotic santas that speak,(and frightened the life out of number one son). I wouldn't mind, but it has been kitted out like that since the start of October! :(
i guess i'm doubly cross about wilko's because i missed them selling their bulbs off at half price. i was planning on getting some queen of the night tulips and allium christophii. i was too late!! >:(
;DI've still loads of birthdays to get through, never mind Christmas...I know I'm sad but Christmas stuff really makes the place messy after a while, I itch to get it cleared up and put a nice bunch of flowers in its place. I love it for a while so don't put decs and things up until the week before.

My sister went to Holland a couple of weeks ago & brought me some of those back (I already have some but she didn't realise that). Gorgeous flowers!
Really would think that someone studying to be a garden designer would realise that sealing bulbs into a plastic sandwich bag isn't a great idea ::)
I don't know if they were mouldy before she got them . . . .
However, she did bring me some FANTASTIC chocolates back, so I'm not too bothered ;D
bar humbug. It's too early for christmas things yet. It's still over a month away. I begin to warm to the christmas spirit in December. I will be feeling very Christmassy one month before, but not until then!
(Although I have now done about half my shopping - oh the wonders of internet shopping - I've done it all from my desk! Trouble is, I still have no idea what to get mum and dad!)
Shopping all done, with 2.5 children, 2 nephews, hub, mum, inlaws galour I have to be organised! Plus, I hate having that one huge hit of expense in December. Spread it out over a couple of months and it doesn't seem so bad.
My mum will be getting a digi camera Aqui - if your folks are 'puter peeps, tis a good pressy idea, and you can get some pretty good cameras for a reasonable sum.
Wonder what father christmas will be bringing me?!?! ;D
Do so agree with the digi camera - it opens up ones life & saves a mint. And allows immediate response to any challenge. And no waste.
BUT - where & how do you save the pics that you want your grand & great grand-children to have. Tapes, mini-tapes, videos, 78s(!) etc go. Today's home printing can fade in weeks.
In the end, a 'real' commercially processed print, in an album, avilable on demand, rather than as part of a 'presentation', seems to me to be the only way? = Tim
PS - Sorry about that diversion. But it has to be thought about?

On a CD? ???
Tim, you save the pictures on CD or DVD - you can get hundreds onto one disc - and your grand and great grand children can then print off their own whenever they wish.
With the amount of stuff now being saved in this way it will be a long time before there is no way to access it.
Oh crumbs! Just recovering from the October Birthday glut, another due in Deember (including mine..teehee!), haven't even made a list yet...off to bed, you guys are toooooo tiring!

Tim has a point, I Wonder what the useful life of a CD is?. I have been told they do have a certain life expectancy. Jim
I too was rather annoyed that all our local garden centres are now 90% Christmas tat and 10% gardening stuff. I have some vouchers that I got for my birthday, and can't find anything (other than singing bl**dy reindeer) to spend them on! >:( Shall wait until after Xmas now.
About data storage on CD - check out the article here: http://addict3d.org/index.php?page=viewarticle&type=news&ID=1787 (http://addict3d.org/index.php?page=viewarticle&type=news&ID=1787) (sorry about the long link).
CD-Rs are not all they're cracked up to be. Some fade quite quickly it seems. Probably not the best media for long term storage. CD-RWs might be better, DVDs better still. Without resorting to expensive systems, it might be best to make two copies of pictures onto CD-R or RWs - use one for 'everyday viewing' and store the other one, but make further copies on a regular basis if you really don't want to lose your pictures.
Get your digital prints professionally printed - just like you used to with films.
I have used an online printing company - great service - but you really need broadband to send the pics through to them.
Usually, I use "Snappy Snaps" - what I do is, I save up all the pictures that I want to print in a folder on my desktop. Then when i can be bothered, I put them all onto CDs and the take them into a local branch of Snappy Snaps - but most processing company's have the same capability. Then pop back in an hour or so and pick up a huge batch of really excellent photos.
They are really excellent because they are the good pictures I have selected from about 6 months of photo-taking. Rather than what i used to do and have loads of "dud" pictures in every batch.
Hooorah, ramble, ramble.

I always get annoyed when Christmas stuff starts turning up in the shops in October, it seems to be earlier and earlier every year, soon they will be bringing it out in June :-\
Re digi photos - you can always take your memory card to a photo place and they can produce prints from your memory card. I did that a couple of years ago and the photos were great! Had to get a certain ammount printed, but if you've got a load, it shouldn't be a problem.
as soon as the christmas stuff is gone it'll be ----- easter eggs!!!!
;DWe've still got hotcross buns for sale..too early or too late?
Yes, & yes - as to saving photos. Roll on broadband. I like the idea of sending on line, rather than risking professional work in the post.
Disks? Daughter had a year's paintings on CD until, somehow, the disk became unplayable. Now everything is double banked on hard disk.
Sorry to clutter the Christmas thread. In any case, I'm more concerned about Seville oranges than tinsel! = Tim
Seville oranges Tim? Is there a shortage?? Are we not going to be able to make marmelade???
Sorry to introduce that - no, but I always tend to miss their arrival in Jan Feb? ? So, that's why we have 4lb in the freezer - in case.
But DO add pectin if you have stored the fruit. = Tim
Camera - nice idea, but dad gave her one of those for her birthday! (apparently he uses it more than her!)
